Federal Recognition

Federal recognition is important to all American Indian groups because it provides members rights, protections and benefits under Federal law. The designation also allows us to proceed with self-governance, advocate for our tribal needs and establish a government to government relationship that will benefit our members and the entire Seward community.

Federal recognition will allow us to enhance and expand services to our members because we can avoid the cumbersome current process and use more time and funds for direct service. We will also have access to all programs open to Native villages meaning we can offer services Chugachmiut doesn’t currently provide.

We don’t need federal recognition to gain pride and awareness of our heritage. We need it to better serve our members and improve our community.

If you would like to help us gain recognition through Congress and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, please .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
